Percussive style basically involves you hitting various parts of the guitar to create percussive sounds of all kinds. While doing this, you also play the instrument melodically. Quite a handful, and as great as this style of guitar playing sounds, it can be very challenging to do.

These are 3 of the most basic percussive techniques: thumb slaps, finger slaps and guitar body taps. Each has a distinct sound, emulating various parts of a drum kit.

The most popular percussive technique, it involves striking the lower strings with the side of the thumb.

Like the thumb slaps except you curl your fingers and slap the strings with these fingers. You can also add the thumb for a fuller sound.

Taps can be done on any part of the guitar body. Normally taps are done on the front of the guitar body, or on the side of the body. Try both and hear the difference in the sound.
