Having good posture is important at all times, but especially when starting out. Not only is it better for your back, but it makes it easier to reach all the parts of the guitar you need to get to.

Proper Hand Placement is Essential

Without having your hands in the right places you'll make things much harder. If you practice with the wrong hand positioning it'll be ingrained and you'll have to spend more time later correcting it.
